The Maldives, Twice: Two Very Different Ways to Do an Overwater Villa

Why we went back

We’ve been to the Maldives twice now — once in December 2021, when we stayed at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, and again in November–December 2024, when the Maldives leg of a longer trip took us to Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa, paired with a stay in Mauritius on the same itinerary. Two trips to the same country might sound repetitive, but the Maldives isn’t really one destination — it’s a scattering of well over a thousand islands and atolls, and the resort you pick shapes the entire trip far more than it would almost anywhere else in the world.

It starts with a seaplane, not a taxi

The first thing to understand about visiting the Maldives is that the trip doesn’t end when you land in Malé. Almost every resort island sits some distance from the capital, and getting there usually means a seaplane or a speedboat transfer arranged directly through the resort. Seaplane transfers in particular are a genuinely distinctive part of Maldives travel — small floatplanes that take off and land on open water, flying low enough that the reef patterns and sandbanks are visible the whole way. Depending on the resort’s location, that transfer alone can eat up a meaningful chunk of a travel day, so it’s worth building arrival-day plans around it rather than expecting to be poolside within the hour.

One island, one resort

Unlike a lot of island-hopping destinations in, say, Greece or Croatia, a Maldives trip usually revolves around a single resort island for the whole stay. You choose your resort before you go, and that choice essentially is the trip — the house reef, the restaurants, the spa, and the villa itself are what you’re working with for the duration, since there’s no wandering into a nearby town for dinner or catching a ferry to see something different the next day. It’s a different rhythm than most of our other trips, closer to a full-immersion resort stay than a touring itinerary, and it took some adjusting to appreciate on its own terms rather than measuring it against a multi-stop trip.

Overwater villas and the price of the view

The overwater villa is the image most people have in their head when they picture the Maldives, and it’s real — a private deck extended over the lagoon, steps down into the water, and a level of privacy that’s hard to match anywhere else. It also comes at a price point that reflects the logistics involved in building and supplying a resort in the middle of an atoll. This is where having a strong loyalty program presence in the region genuinely pays off for us. Both of our stays were at Hilton-family properties — Conrad in 2021, Hilton in 2024 — and being able to lean on points toward accommodation that would otherwise run quite high made both trips feel considerably more attainable than paying entirely out of pocket would have.

Two different flavors of the same idea

We haven’t tried to rank Conrad Rangali Island against Hilton Amingiri, since they served different purposes on different trips — one a standalone Maldives holiday, the other paired with Mauritius as part of a longer Indian Ocean run. What we can say is that both delivered on the core Maldives promise: clear, warm water, a slower pace than almost anywhere else we travel, and the particular pleasure of falling asleep to water moving beneath the floor. If a Maldives trip is on your list, our honest advice is to spend real time researching which atoll and which resort fit the pace you want, since unlike a city trip, you generally don’t get to sample a few different neighborhoods once you’ve committed.

Practical notes for planning

Flight connections into Malé from Europe typically involve at least one stop, and the seaplane network generally doesn’t operate after dark, so arrival timing matters more here than at a typical beach destination — landing too late in the day can mean an overnight in Malé before the transfer to your resort. Overwater villas are also usually the most expensive category at any given resort, with beach villas and garden villas offering a lower-cost way into the same property if the villa type matters less to you than the resort itself.
